Learning Intention: I can build and sustain relationships.
It is with much sadness that we had to say goodbye to not one, but TWO of our wonderful boys this week. Jack of Division 1 will be continuing his adventure in California, while Eden of Division 2 is excited to see what Toronto has to offer him. These boys hold such a special part to our Chantrell community, so we felt it was only right to try and send them off properly. On Wednesday, we gathered both classes in the gym for some fun and on Friday, we brought both classes together to watch The Mummy (which goes with our Egypt unit). We will miss these boys a lot! Good luck to your both on your future endeavors, I'm sure this won't be the last we hear of you!
Learning Intention: I can build and sustain relationships.

Learning Intention: I can collaboratively plan a range of investigation types, including field work and experiments, to answer questions or solve problems identified.
Meanwhile, the Grade 6s have begun their term 2 Science unit on Exploring Extreme Environments. In the first chapter, we are learning about how extreme environments are places where human survival is difficult or impossible. They were busy planning for an extreme environment expedition. They were told that they were part of a team of scientists that will join Dr. Schmidt on a 30-day expedition to Mount Logan. Mount Logan is 5959 m high. It is Canada’s highest peak and the second highest peak in North America. They were asked to work in groups to figure out what they would need to take on their expedition, including air, warmth, food, and water.
To be successful on their expedition, the list must include: • equipment to help you breathe at the top of the mountain where the air is thinner • ways to protect yourself from the cold, wet, and wind • food and water, as well as ways to cook the food • ways to transport yourself and any equipment you may have • equipment for communication Here's one of the group's iMovie showing what they learned. As you can tell, they not only learned a lot, but had a lot of fun doing it as well! Learning Intentions: I can generate and introduce new or refined ideas when problem solving. I can co-operatively design projects. I can communicate ideas, explanations, and processes in a variety of ways. This week we had the opportunity to explore Ms. Soo's S.T.E.A.M. Lab. This approach to learning will engage the students in inquiry through multiple learning styles, developing confidence, creativity, and interest in science, technology, engineering, art, math and learning as' a whole through making. Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies is part of the new BC curriculum and "builds on students’ natural curiosity, inventiveness, and desire to create and work in practical ways. It harnesses the power of learning by doing, and provides the challenging fun that inspires students to dig deeper, work with big ideas, and adapt to a changing world. It provides learning opportunities through which students can discover their interests in practical and purposeful ways." Some activities we partook in included robotics, designing with TinkerCAD for 3D printing, making vertical marble runs, creating with wires and cardboard, and playing with littleBits and MaKey MaKeys.
Learning Intention: I can explore and test a variety of materials for effective use. I hope everyone had a fun and restful winter break! We have been getting back into our routines, and are excited about the new things that are coming for term 2, such as Egypt, literature circles, geometry, extreme environments, and the Earth's crust! Some exciting news for our room: a couple of months ago I applied through the Fuel Your School Program (run by My Class Needs) for 3 iPad minis for our classroom, and a few weeks ago Chevron funded our project and we received them! We are so excited for the endless opportunities this will provide for Division 2! Before the break, I taught us how to paint on canvas using acrylic paints. I was first introduced to this a couple of years ago at a "Paint Nite", and it has become a relaxing hobby of mine since. We learned how to mix and blend our chosen colour with white paint to create a beautiful backdrop, and then we had room for creativity and used black paint to create silhouettes of our own choosing. The finished products are amazing, I am very proud of all of you, and I'm sure they look beautiful hanging in all of your homes!
Learning Intention: I can intentionally select and apply materials, tools, and techniques by combining and arranging artistic elements, processes, and principles in art making. |
